The Phoenicians and the Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Moors from ancient times led the development of ore deposits along the shores of Rio Tinto. The bottom of the river and water got bright red hue because of the high content of salts of copper and iron. Human industrial activity made this river "dead", which is inhabited only rare species particularly resistant to high acid bacteria.
