Hashima Island is an abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. It was founded in 1887 as a former settlement of miners. Hashima was considered as one of the most densely populated places on Earth - in 1959 its population was 5259 people per 1 kilometer of coastline. When the coal mine became unprofitable, it was closed in 1974 and this city-island joined the list of ghost towns.
