Lake Nicaragua is the only place in the world where the freshwater sharks live. In June 2013 the government approved the construction of the Nicaragua Channel. This project, which valued at $40 billion, will connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, dividing the country in half. Scientists predict that it will lead to disastrous consequences for the country's natural heritage, as well as indigenous people. The hundreds of villages will be evacuated and relocated. Because of this project, Nicaragua has too many chances to lose more than half a million hectares of rain forests and wetlands.
