Number remaining: around 600,000. The population of African forest elephants have decreased by 60% from 2002 to 2011. They are still threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth. Elephants occupy only 7% of their original habitat owing to habitat loss, prey depletion and direct persecution.
