Regular meditation for a long time helps people to control the level of stress, thoughts and reactions to those thoughts. MRI scan showed that this is what meditation does.Through meditation you modify your brain, relying more on internal voice and rational decisions, rather than instinctive movements. It also helps to cope with the pain, which partly explains why meditators have high tolerance for pain and suffer less in disorders or diseases. It turns out, that "Zen" is not just a newfangled way to deal with stress, it is quite a scientific method of training the brain to work properly.
