Seasons arise not because of the elliptical orbit of the Earth, but because of the different inclination of the Earth's axis relative to the trajectory of the Earth's orbit. Thus, there is a summer in the northern hemisphere of Earth, when it is tilted toward the sun, and there is a winter, when it is inclined from the sun. Surprisingly, but the Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, just when there is a winter in the northern hemisphere, and a summer in the south.
