The Rosetta Stone is a stele that was inscribed in Egypt in 196 BC. It was discovered in 1799 by a French soldier and today is one of archaeology's greatest discoveries and the primary source for modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone contains a decree issued by King Ptolemy V and inscribed in 3 languages – Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and Ancient Greek.
