Semi-autobiographical novel written by Dominican author Junot Díaz, tells the story of a thick and deeply unhappy child, who is going through the process of growing up in New Jersey and dying prematurely in early adolescence. The work was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. A notable feature of the book is a mixture of standard English, "Spanglish" (a mixture of English and Spanish) and street slang of Hispanics who have settled in America.
