In 1912 Dalai Lama XIII declared the independence of Tibet from China and proclaimed an independent Tibetan state. In 1951 Chinese troops invaded Tibet and occupied it. In 1959, a rebellion broke out, directed against the Chinese invaders, but it was quickly suppressed. Tibetans are calling for independence to this day, and they have many supporters among the world's politicians and prominent figures of science and art.
