John Charles Cutler, senior physician of the Department of Health of the Government of the United States, was responsible for carrying out experiments on the patients with syphilis in Guatemala. In 2005, it became known that prisoners, soldiers and patients with sexually transmitted diseases were intentionally brought without their consent to the participation in the experiment. The researchers studied the effect of penicillin in the treatment of syphilis. As a result, they artificially infected more than 1 000 people who did not receive appropriate medical care. 83 people have died caused by the experiment, for which in 2010 the US government has brought the country an official apology.
